Abstract

In 2009 Professor Mazzarol and Mr Ron McFarlane were lead consultants on a major study undertaken for the WA Department of Planning and LandCorp investigating the underlying status of industrial land in WA in terms of supply and demand, and future directions for the development of new industrial estates. The study was a major contribution to the development of the WA Government’s Industrial Land Strategy (ILS). The project was undertaken through a consortia comprising JMG Marketing as lead agency, Colliers International and Painted Dog Research. Professor Mazzarol and Ron McFarlane sub-contracted to the consortia via their own consulting companies and were responsible for overall leadership of the project including being lead investigators in three of the four stages. The project took place from March to December 2009 and commenced in Stage 1 with a global market scan of international best practice in industrial land development and planning. Stage 2 involved qualitative research of firms occupying industrial estates across WA, while Stage 3 comprised a major review of the industrial land occupiers database held by Department of Planning and an examination of its structure using WASLUC codes. A telephone survey of 600 firms located in Perth and regional areas was completed. During the final stage a series of workshops were facilitated by Professor Mazzarol and Ron McFarlane with senior level representatives from State and Local Government agencies, as well as the private sector, prior to the completion of the final report and recommendations.
